The University of Florida Student Chapter of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) is partnering with the UF Water Institute and the CUAHSI to host "Let's Talk About Water," a campus-wide discussion about water, including a documentary screening of "Last Call at the Oasis," an expert panel & discussion, and an art exhibit, featuring pieces by YOU: students of the University of Florida.

The art show will take place on February 15, 2016, following the screening of "Last Call at the Oasis" at Ustler Hall. The exhibit will be a showcase of students' water-related art of any medium (photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, etc...). Both undergraduates and graduate students of any discipline/major are invited to submit artwork or any questions to jennifermadler@ufl.edu. The deadline for submissions is JANUARY 15, 2016.

More details:

  • We are limited to 25 pieces in the exhibit; pieces will be selected by the AWRA board and we will confirm your selection shortly after the January 15th deadline.
  • Your piece will be on display at Ustler Hall for the evening of February 15 during a reception that will take place following the screening of Last Call at the Oasis
  • Admission to the documentary screening and reception are free, but you do need to sign up ahead of time (we will post the link here when registration begins)

UPCOMING SEMINARS: Water Institute Distinguished Seminar Series

Next week, the UF Water Institute will host a talk by their recently named 2014 Faculty Fellows, Dr. James Jawitz and Dr. Jonathan Martin. Here are more details about the event:

Additionally, the Water Institute will be hosting a seminar on Thursday, January 29:

Speaker:   Prof. Marnik Vanclooster, Earth and Life Institute - Environmental Sciences, Universite catholique de Louvain, Belgium
Seminar Title:  "L'union fait la force" or how different approaches should be combined to characterize water quality of groundwater bodies
Seminar Description:  The sustainable management of groundwater implies an in depth knowledge of the status of groundwater and the pressures that are exerted on it. Monitoring and modeling groundwater systems allows generating the required information for such an appropriate management. Yet, the classical monitoring techniques are confronted with small sampling support, and the current modelling techniques suffer from limited validation and accuracy. In this lecture, we show how advanced monitoring, including the monitoring of stable isotopes, in combination with spatially distributed modelling improves considerably the quality of the groundwater assessment. The techniques are illustrated for assessing groundwater contamination by nitrates.
Time:  3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Location:  2nd Floor Auditorium, J. Wayne Reitz Union

For more information, visit the UF Water Institute website. Hope to see you on the 14th and the 29th. And stay tuned for information about our first AWRA meeting of the semester!
